Spoonbill, Iceland Gull and Black Redstart

The Spoonbill at the Fertha Estuary, just north of Caherciveen, is now present for its fourth winter. Unfortunately, the other regular Spoonbill at Cromane has not reappeared for the first time in 16 consecutive winters.

Curlew Sandpiper at Kilshannig

A Curlew Sandpiper in winter in Ireland is a rare sight. This bird has been present since perhaps late November 2022, frequenting the flooded pools at Kilshannig at high tide, and the nearby beaches at mid- to low tide. No sign of any summer plumage yet, though that might be seen in a few more weeks, if it sticks around.
